My agenda for Philadelphia: A healthier city for a stronger tomorrow.

I’m running to make Philadelphia a healthier, stronger city. All of our challenges are rooted in our health. From crime and gun violence to housing and the environment, if we make Philadelphia a healthier city, we can make it a stronger, safer city.

As a biomedical scientist, I’ve spent my life taking on these kinds of challenges, and I’ve used science and data to find new solutions to old problems.  As an advocate for “those left behind,” while serving as the Deputy Mayor, I worked to open doors and established the Office of Public Engagement, so those closest to the pain had a seat at the table to help craft effective policy.  As a leader within the National Organization for Women and having survived a war as a child that targeted women and girls, I have fought to level the playing field, especially at the intersection of gender and race, and underscore that “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights”!

I am deeply grateful to Philadelphia for welcoming me as an immigrant, for helping me get an education that has opened possibilities, and for allowing me to put down my roots and raise a family!

Serving as a City Councilmember At-large will be a down payment on the debt of gratitude I owe my City.

First, I want to thank all my supporters, Team Nina for Philly and especially my daughters Priya and Joya and my husband, Ahsan. They have kept me going and had my back every day on this campaign. I could not have earned this Democratic nomination without them. I am so proud of the broad coalition we built across the city. This has been a long journey for a young woman from Bangladesh who came to find an opportunity for a better life.

Now, to have the chance to represent the city that has been so good to me, it is the epitome of a dream come true. It is also a lesson for anyone who may look a little different or sound a little different: Always know that your voice matters, your voice should be heard. I will continue to listen to the people of Philadelphia and fight for them every day to build a healthier, stronger city.
